History & Practice of The Body Appropriate
You might have come to know the project through previous public dissections of birds an mammals at places like The Exploratorium & The Maker Faire.

The project opened its physical doors this July 2014. The Body Appropriate developed a private studio gallery and artistic social practice that studies the body and appropriates research to understand the less considered means of living and dying.  It also exhibits private collections from local artists and collectors. The project has moulded into different forms over the years; from artistic practices that activate collections inside other museums, founding itself in collaborations with other artists, and demonstrating conversational and scientific animal dissections to raise public awareness of, and allows for exposure to, the interior body.

Public Dissections

Please feel free to contact me (Stephanie) if you would like to set up a bird or mammal dissection for your own project, museum, or school.
I teach group dissections to adults and children, homeschool groups and individuals, as well as demonstrations for events.

I have been performing gross anatomical dissection to the uninitiated and accustomed alike, at the Exploratorium, The Maker Faire, The Tinkering Studio, California Academy of Sciences, and in biological project lab settings.

Post Mortem Alternatives

This project advocates generating awareness for, and promotes brainstorming and considering, taking care of the remains of people's bodies yourself. Some call that DIY death care.

This project also realizes that sometimes, even if you are aware that you can take care of the body yourself, you still might prefer skilled people to help you or to prepare the body for you.

In general, I am personally advocating for a growth in general awareness for death as an inevitable that happens to everyone, and that our anatomy is directly linked to our living, as well as our decay.  The Post Mortem Alternative page is a list of resources to help you be creative about end of life care, as well as linking you to natural death care sites, generally amazing people, and genuine companies in the death care field.
